Huila’s festive couple dance, star of the Festival del Bambuco: colourful flowered skirts, straw hats and playful courtship.
The sanjuanero is a bambuco-based dance created in Huila and celebrated during the San Juan and San Pedro festivities in Neiva. Its well-known music and choreography were shaped in the twentieth century and quickly became the region’s symbol. The woman wears a wide skirt decorated with flowers and sequins and a flower in her hair; the man wears a white shirt, red scarf and straw hat. Through a sequence of figures the couple flirts, teases and finally walks together. Every year the Festival Folclórico y Reinado Nacional del Bambuco brings dancers from all over Colombia to Neiva.
