A joyful couple dance of the Caribbean savannas, played by brass bands and danced in open circles at town fiestas.
Porro developed in the savannas of Córdoba and Sucre, where village brass bands mixed local rhythms with wind instruments. The town of San Pelayo hosts the Festival Nacional del Porro, and its ‘bandas pelayeras’ are famous. In the traditional fandango, couples dance around the band while the public joins in; women sometimes carry bundles of candles. Porro also became popular in big orchestras and city dance halls, so it can be enjoyed both as street celebration and as elegant social dance.
