These traditions belong to living Azerbaijani-speaking communities across borders. DANZO distinguishes performances within Iranian Azerbaijan from those filmed elsewhere.
Yalli, Lezginka and other forms are not interchangeable; a particular troupe must be credited by name and place. Iranian Azerbaijani dancing belongs to a larger, cross-border Azerbaijani cultural landscape while keeping local identities in Tabriz, Ardabil, Urmia and many towns and villages. Solo and group styles feature distinct gendered and theatrical conventions, from small controlled gestures to striking footwork and athletic turns. Not every staged display describes how families dance at weddings. Costume and repertoire vary according to music, gender, era and troupe. Claims that every knee-spin is an ancient combat survival need strong historical evidence; movement skill alone cannot prove such a genealogy. Our performance archive gives priority to correct community and repertoire labels.
