UNESCO-listed in 2024, this festive dance of Tropojë brings partners face to face with raised arms, circling steps and lively drum accompaniment.
K’cimi is a festive dance associated with Tropojë in northern Albania. At weddings, birthdays and community celebrations, dancers often face one another without touching, circling and raising or lowering their arms to drum rhythms. The performance is open to people of different ages and the partners may change during the occasion. Women sometimes wave a red handkerchief, while traditional clothing may be worn for particular celebrations. Rather than being learned only from a teacher, the dance is often passed from older to younger people through watching and joining in. UNESCO inscribed K’cimi dancing of Tropojë on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024, recognizing a living community practice rather than a fixed theatrical routine.
