Folk & Traditional Dances

Square Dance
Four couples in a square, guided by a caller's rhymed instructions — an American folk form that is the official dance in over 30 states.
Why this dance

Square dance grew from English, Scottish, and French quadrille and contredanse traditions brought by colonists and reshaped on the American frontier, where a "caller" narrating the steps let dances be led on the spot without formal training. That practical, democratic form suited itinerant rural communities, and was later adopted by dozens of states as an official symbol of American folk heritage.

Ritual & Ceremonial Dances

Hoop Dance
A storytelling dance practiced across many Native American nations, in which a dancer forms shapes — eagles, butterflies, the world itself — from an increasing number of hoops.
Why this dance

Practiced across many Native nations, each with its own account of the dance's origin, the hoop dance is a storytelling and healing form: the circle represents the never-ending cycle of life, and as a dancer builds shapes like eagles and butterflies from an increasing number of hoops, the dance embodies balance, unity, and connection to the natural world.

Why we dance

Every tradition on this map is a branch of something older than writing itself. The oldest paintings we have of humans doing anything at all — at Bhimbetka in India, in cave art in Borneo — already show people dancing. Long before anyone could write a reason down, dance was already binding communities together, marking the passage from childhood to adulthood, and reaching toward whatever each culture understood as sacred.
