1 dancesOriginally a courtly processional for the Polish nobility (szlachta), the polonaise's slow, walking triple-meter grandeur was designed to let every guest at a ball be seen — a dance of status and display that opened royal functions and weddings. It was later adopted across European courts and, especially through Chopin's music, became a symbol of Polish national dignity during periods when Poland itself was partitioned and stateless.

Every tradition on this map is a branch of something older than writing itself. The oldest paintings we have of humans doing anything at all — at Bhimbetka in India, in cave art in Borneo — already show people dancing. Long before anyone could write a reason down, dance was already binding communities together, marking the passage from childhood to adulthood, and reaching toward whatever each culture understood as sacred.
