Ritual & Ceremonial Dances
1 dancesHaka long predates its modern fame as a sports pregame ritual. Traditionally performed by Māori before battle to display strength and unity and intimidate an approaching enemy, it's equally performed to welcome honored guests, celebrate achievements, and mark funerals — its forceful stamping, wide eyes (pūkana), and protruding tongue (whetero) a codified display of ihi (power) and wehi (a fear-inspiring presence) meant to be felt by both performer and observer.
Every tradition on this map is a branch of something older than writing itself. The oldest paintings we have of humans doing anything at all — at Bhimbetka in India, in cave art in Borneo — already show people dancing. Long before anyone could write a reason down, dance was already binding communities together, marking the passage from childhood to adulthood, and reaching toward whatever each culture understood as sacred.
