Folk & Traditional Dances

Bon Odori
A community circle dance performed during Obon to welcome and honor ancestral spirits.
Why this dance

Danced during the Obon festival, when Buddhist tradition holds that ancestral spirits return to visit the living, Bon Odori's circular community dance both welcomes those spirits and later sends them off. Its steps trace back partly to a Buddhist monk's dance of joyful release, originally performed to celebrate a follower's liberation from suffering.

Why we dance

Every tradition on this map is a branch of something older than writing itself. The oldest paintings we have of humans doing anything at all — at Bhimbetka in India, in cave art in Borneo — already show people dancing. Long before anyone could write a reason down, dance was already binding communities together, marking the passage from childhood to adulthood, and reaching toward whatever each culture understood as sacred.
