Folk & Traditional Dances

1 dances
Tanoura
A spinning folk dance related to Sufi whirling, performed in colorful, multi-layered skirts.
Why this dance

Tanoura descends directly from the whirling practice of Sufi orders, where the dervish's continuous spin is meant to induce a meditative, trance-like state symbolizing the soul's journey toward divine union. The colorful, multi-layered skirt, which lifts as the dancer spins, was folded into folkloric stage performance over time while retaining its Sufi devotional roots.

Why we dance

Every tradition on this map is a branch of something older than writing itself. The oldest paintings we have of humans doing anything at all — at Bhimbetka in India, in cave art in Borneo — already show people dancing. Long before anyone could write a reason down, dance was already binding communities together, marking the passage from childhood to adulthood, and reaching toward whatever each culture understood as sacred.
