Folk & Traditional Dances

1 dances
Punto Guanacasteco
Costa Rica's official national dance, a courtship dance from the Guanacaste region marked by an improvised sung interlude.
Why this dance

Costa Rica named it the national dance by decree in 1941. Born in the cattle-ranching region of Guanacaste, its improvised sung verses (bombas) let dancers publicly flirt, tease, and court within the bounds of a respectable, community-watched courtship ritual.

Why we dance

Every tradition on this map is a branch of something older than writing itself. The oldest paintings we have of humans doing anything at all — at Bhimbetka in India, in cave art in Borneo — already show people dancing. Long before anyone could write a reason down, dance was already binding communities together, marking the passage from childhood to adulthood, and reaching toward whatever each culture understood as sacred.
