Folk & Traditional Dances
1 dancesRooted in agrarian ritual for over a thousand years, the dance is believed to scare away evil spirits and bad luck (nian), while the dragon or lion's movements — chasing a ball, "eating" lettuce offerings — are read as invitations for prosperity, rain, and good fortune to enter a community for the coming year. That's why it clusters so heavily around Lunar New Year.

Every tradition on this map is a branch of something older than writing itself. The oldest paintings we have of humans doing anything at all — at Bhimbetka in India, in cave art in Borneo — already show people dancing. Long before anyone could write a reason down, dance was already binding communities together, marking the passage from childhood to adulthood, and reaching toward whatever each culture understood as sacred.
