Folk & Traditional Dances

1 dances
Red River Jig
A fast, syncopated fiddle dance born from Métis culture, blending Indigenous and French-Canadian footwork traditions.
Why this dance

It emerged in the Red River Colony among the Métis, a people born from the intermarriage of European fur traders and First Nations women. The jig fuses Indigenous rhythmic footwork with French-Canadian and Scottish fiddle tradition, historically functioning as both entertainment and a marker of a distinct Métis identity that didn't fully belong to either parent culture.

Why we dance

Every tradition on this map is a branch of something older than writing itself. The oldest paintings we have of humans doing anything at all — at Bhimbetka in India, in cave art in Borneo — already show people dancing. Long before anyone could write a reason down, dance was already binding communities together, marking the passage from childhood to adulthood, and reaching toward whatever each culture understood as sacred.
